Raiders activate Donald Penn off PUP, make a position switch

NAPA – The Raiders activated Donald Penn off the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday morning, and have asked him to switch positions.

The career left tackle was seen working on the right flank in his first practice back from Dec. 2017 Lisfranc foot surgery, a position he played just once as a professional.

He spent 24 snaps at right tackle in a 2016 regular-season opening victory at New Orleans, and then went back to his normal position. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons playing left tackle.

First-round pick Kolton Miller has played left tackle through the offseason program and training camp with Penn out. Coaches have praised the UCLA product and his peers for work his practice and play.

Penn’s activation comes a day after he agreed to restructure his contract, a league source told NBC Sports Bay Area, where he took less money in 2018 in exchange for new guaranteed money in 2018 and 2019. Exact terms are not known at this time.

The Raiders have problems at right tackle with Breno Giacomini missing most of camp with a knee injury. Rookie third-round offensive tackle Brandon Parker has been impacted by an ankle injury.

Miller played right tackle as a junior at UCLA, but didn’t perform well there and has publicly stated his preference to stay on the left.

Head coach Jon Gruden is not scheduled to speak with the media until Wednesday afternoon.
