The Raiders on Wedensday placed rookie defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. on season-ending injured reserve with a neck injury, the team announced.

The injury is significant and could require surgery, according to head coach Jack Del Rio.

Edwards, 21, accumulated 42 total tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles and two passes defended in his rookie season. He was selected by the Raiders in the second round (35th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

To take his place on the 53-man roster, the team promoted linebacker John Lotulelei from the practice squad.

Lotulelei's agent Michael Hoffman posted a congratulatory message Wednesday on Twitter: "Special Merry Christmas to #Raiders client John Lotulelei for his promotion today. #FinishStrong #NFL"

Lotulelei, 24, has played in 16 games, including two starts over four NFL seasons with the Jaguars and Seahawks.
