Some 24 years later, the Kings win the Cup…in the Raiders' colors

Mark Davis took more than a passing interest in the Los Angeles Kings winning their first Stanley Cup Monday night. After all, the Raiders owner was a former Kings season ticket holder from the days when both teams shared the Southland. And, for the past 24 years, the Kings have, ahem, borrowed the Raiders' color scheme, much to the chagrin of Davis' late father, Al."Congratulations to the Kings," Davis told CSNCalifornia.com. "The Silver and Black just won, baby."Davis said he "used to live" at the Great Western Forum as a season ticket holder for both the Kings and Lakers, and became friendly with Wayne Gretzky and former Kings owner Bruce McNall.RELATED: Complete Stanley Cup coverageProHockeyTalk.com
"He was quite a character," Davis said of McNall.Especially when McNall had the Kings switch their cartoonish purple and gold motif to the more imposing silver and black upon The Great One's arrival in 1988."I thought they had class when they did it, when they made that change," Davis said. "But I'm not sure my dad, if he ever gave them the, Way to go. Those were interesting days."Ice Cube's documentary on the Raiders' cultural impact during their 13-season sojourn in SoCal from 1982 through 1994 "Straight Outta L.A." delved into the topic."During that time, I called Al Davis, and I asked him whether or not that was going to be O.K. with him or not, or cool," McNall said on the documentary. "I didn't want to upset him, or anything."Al Davis' take?"Yeah, I didn't like it," Davis told Ice Cube. "No, I didn't. I didn't like that any team was going to use black and silver; those are our colors. And then a couple of baseball teams started to go to it."Said McNall: "Our sales, of course, went through the roof once we changed those colors. It was an unbelievable phenomenon."Al Davis never truly gave his blessing, as hinted by his son. But he did wink a bit."They did have beautiful uniforms," Al Davis said. "I will say that for them. It was classy."Classier now, some will say, that the Kings have a title.
