Source: Raiders want Donald Penn to take pay cut

NAPA — The Raiders would like left tackle Donald Penn to take a pay cut, less than a year after working out a $21 million contract extension that lasts through the 2019 season

Penn held out of last year’s training camp to looking for more, but reported in August and added guarantees and two years to his deal a few weeks later.

A team source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area on Wednesday morning that the Raiders want Penn to take less.

It’s uncertain what happens next.

Penn could reject the notion, though the Raiders could cut him and avoid paying a $3 million non-guaranteed portion of his base salary as a result. In addition, there are also $1.75 million in per-game roster bonuses in the terms of his deal for this season. He could earn up to $8.4 million this season

The sides could get creative and make things work with a new contract structure to avoid a stare down. Time will tell on that front.

Penn is currently on the physically unable to perform list recovering from Lisfranc foot surgery. First-round pick Kolton Miller has received praise for his training camp performance, though a healthy and agile Penn would provide experience helpful against the AFC West’s dominant edge rushers.

The Las Vegas Review Journal first reported news that the Raiders would like Penn to take a pay cut.
