Top 5 additions to 2014 Raiders roster
/

1. QB Matt Schaub
The 33-year old should add much-needed stability to the quarterback position this year, as a leader and on-field producer. Schaub’s 2013 struggles are well documented, but the coaching staff has absolute confidence in his ability to rebound. While rookie Derek Carr has been impressive, expect Schaub to be the unquestioned starter to start the season.

2. OLB Khalil Mack
The Raiders were ecstatic when Mack was available at No. 5 overall in the NFL draft. Head coach Dennis Allen will use Mack in a variety of ways, and get creative with him as a pass rusher. He’ll be a wild card for this defense, and could make a huge impact in his rookie year. If he can live up to lofty expectations, the Raiders could be better than many expect.

3. RB Maurice Jones-Drew
The 29-year old running back has an impressive resume, with a career average of 4.5 yards per carry. He has three Pro Bowl appearances and three seasons with 1,300 yards or more. The most important question: Can he do it again? He was hurt in each of the last two years. If he can stay healthy, expect him to lead a run-first offense down the field.

4. DE LaMarr Woodley
The 29-year old is switching positions this year, from a 3-4 outside linebacker to a 4-3 defensive end. He’ll have his hand in the dirt for the first time since college, and is excited about the new challenge. The Raiders will be excited if the switch rejuvenates his career after a pair of down years. If he can be productive, that will create chances for fellow end Justin Tuck and linebacker Khalil Mack. That trio could be dangerous to opposing quarterbacks.

5. LT Donald Penn
The Raiders weren’t happy about losing Jared Veldheer to Arizona in free agency. Penn provides a solid Plan B, assuming he can return to old form. According to Pro Football Focus, Penn allowed 12 sacks last season in an admittedly down year for the veteran. If he can play up to his potential again, the quarterback Matt Schaub’s blind side is protected. If he struggles, the offense will too.
