Why Jay Glazer believes Jon Gruden, Mike Mayock work well for Raiders

So far, so good for Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock.

In their first year together with the Raiders, the head coach and general manager selected several impact players during the 2019 NFL Draft and had the Silver and Black in playoff contention until the final weekend of the regular season.

But as The Athletic's Tim Kawakami pointed out recently, Mayock hasn't spoken to the media in a few months. That's unusual.

So is there trouble in paradise?

The Athletic's Jay Glazer was asked about the relationship between Gruden and Mayock, and had this to say:

"I’ve always said that they needed a mature grown-up in that building," Glazer wrote. "Gruden is the emotional one, that’s his role and his job. Mayock is the guy who has the temperament you want and what you need. He is the grown-up in that building and, yeah, they are going to build with him. They would be crazy to let Mike Mayock leave because not everyone can work with Jon Gruden and not everyone can work with Mike Mayock.

"It’s not a knock on Gruden — you’ve got to be a little crazy to be a head coach in the NFL."

The Raiders hired Mayock away from NFL Network on Dec. 31, 2018, so it would be odd timing if he left the organization a little over a year after taking the job.

Despite Mayock's lack of face time with the media, Glazer explained why he believes the first-year general manager gets along so well with Gruden.

"As a general manager, you have to be the middleman between the owner and the head coach, you have to deal with the business side," Glazer wrote. "You have to go pick out the best players who your head coach is going to be able to work with and Mike Mayock has done that. Mike’s great because he’s not trying to get the types of players he wants, he’s getting the types of players he knows Jon is going to love and use."

For now, whatever state their relationship is in, Mayock and Gruden are preparing for the 2020 NFL Draft and the team's move to Las Vegas.

But this is something to keep an eye on considering the public hasn't heard from Mayock in a while.
