SaberCats add DBs Brinkley, Hedgemon

SAN JOSE -- The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned a pair of defensive backs; Brandon Brinkley and former Utah Blaze defensive back LaBrose Hedgemon.

"Brandon and LaBrose are both quick and tenacious defenders who really get after the football," said OwnerHead Coach Darren Arbet. "They add solid depth to our team and we are looking forward to seeing both of them contribute right away.

Brinkley (6-0, 190, Houston) appeared in two games with the SaberCats to begin the 2012 season, recording eight total tackles and a fumble recovery before being traded to the Chicago Rush. With Chicago, Brinkley played in just one game on May 26 against San Jose and recorded a team-high eight tackles in that game. In 2011, the Bay City, Texas native appeared in eight games for the Milwaukee Mustangs, totaling 29.5 tackles, five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

A four-year letterman at Houston, Brinkley played in 53 games for the Cougars posting 197 tackles, 53 passes defensed, 11 interceptions, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. His best season came as a senior in 2009, where he totaled 75 tackles, 16 passes defensed, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, earning second-team All-Conference USA honors in the process.

Hedgemon (5-10, 190, Jackson State) most recently saw action in one game this season with the Utah Blaze, where he recorded five-and-a-half total tackles (five solo) in the teams 61-58 win over the Milwaukee Mustangs. He experienced an excellent season in 2011 with Utah, amassing 72.5 total tackles (55 solo), one interception, eight pass breakups, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles in 14 games. In 2010, the Hoover, Ala. native started one game with the Blaze, intercepting a pass and returning it 22 yards while also racking up three solo tackles and one assisted tackle.

At Jackson State, he saw action in 12 games in 2007, recording 26 tackles and two interceptions, while forcing two pass breakups. Hedgemon transferred to Jackson State in time for the 2006 season, where he appeared in nine games for the Tigers and had 22 tackles, forced two pass breakups, added one fumble recovery and two interceptions. After joining Notre Dame his freshman year in 2003, he saw action in 2005 when he had six pass breakups and 16 tackles.
