The San Jose City Council approved a 200,000 square-foot expansion of Solar4America Ice at San Jose, which adds two additional recreational sheets of ice to the facility. That brings the total to six sheets of ice, including one which will be the new home of the Barracuda, the Sharks' AHL affiliate.The expansion also will make the facility the largest under one roof west of the Mississippi River.Here are some of the renderings:

When the expansion's complete, the facility's footprint will double to slightly under 400,000 square feet.

Construction for the facility is expected to be complete by April 2022.

The 4,200-seat arena includes locker rooms, training facilities and office space for the Sharks' top minor league affiliate.

The arena's ice surface also will be available for public use when the Barracuda are not in town using the facility.

In addition to being the Barracuda's new home, the remodeled Solar4America Ice at San Jose will host the San Jose State University Spartans hockey team, the Jr. Sharks hockey program, the Peninsula Figure Skating Club and the Silicon Valley Curling Club.

The space also will have an in-arena Jumbotron with a 360-degree LED display ring with a 46-person party deck, three bat locations and several food concession stands. A press room and press box also will be featured along with two team merchandise stores.
