NHL rumors: Prospect Fredrik Handemark, Sharks agree to contract

The Sharks already have added two top prospects to their organization this year, and it appears a third one might be on the way.

Writers Hans Abrahamsson and Tomas Ros of Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet (h/t to Fear The Fin) reported earlier this week that top prospect Fredrik Handemark has decided to join the Sharks over the Detroit Red Wings.

Aftonbladet reported that Handemark and the Sharks have agreed to a one-year, $900,000 contract if he plays at the NHL level.

"Of course it is fun that there is talk and there is interest," Handemark said, via Aftonbladet. "The only thing I can influence is to continue to play well and win matches with Malmö. Don't look too far ahead, although it is my goal and my dream to play in the NHL."

The 26-year-old center, who's 6-foot-4 and 209 pounds, tallied 14 assists and 24 assists in 52 games this past season for the Malmö Redhawks of the Swedish Hockey League.

Assuming Handemark signs with the Sharks, he will join recent additions UMass-Amherst forward John Leonard and Arizona State defenseman Brinson Pasichnuk.

With an aging roster, the Sharks need an influx of youth. 21-year-old defenseman Mario Ferraro was a bright spot for San Jose this season, and the team hopes adding the likes of Leonard, Pasichnuk and Handemark will help take them back to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
