Report: Meier's potential extension talks will start at $9M

Does Timo Meier want to join the $9 million club?

That’s what Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic said about the Sharks star on Thursday. Otherwise, the pending RFA is due a $10 million qualifying offer.

“If the qualifying offer is scaring teams, know that he won’t come much cheaper on an extension,” the insider wrote. “I think the ask on a new contract starts with at least a nine.”

The 26-year-old winger likely is worth it: Since the beginning of last season, Meier is 14th in the NHL with 63 goals and tied for the league lead with 549 shots.

Meier apparently is trying to join a select group of, according to Puckpedia, 22 forwards who have a cap hit of $9 million or more. The wingers on this list include Artemi Panarin, Mitch Marner, Patrick Kane, Johnny Gaudreau, Mark Stone, Alex Ovechkin, Nikita Kucherov, Matthew Tkachuk, Mikko Rantanen, Kirill Kaprizov, and Jeff Skinner.
