The Sharks and Brent Burns are reportedly getting closer to a contract extension.

According to a tweet from ESPN’s Pierre Lebrun, the “Sharks and Brent Burns have made serious progress in negotiations on a new deal. Still not done but could be close.”

Burns is a pending unrestricted free agent in the final year of a five-year, $28.8 million contract, and will likely be getting a sizable raise in his next deal.

The 31-year-old has 16 points (7g, 9a) in 19 games this season, first in the NHL among defensemen. He finished in third place in voting for the Norris Trophy last season.
