Sharks hire ex-Giants assistant general manager Ned Colletti as scout

Another Bay Area team has hired a former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager into its front office, but it wasn’t the A’s or Giants who bolstered their scouting departments on Friday.

The San Jose Sharks announced that the team has hired ex-Dodgers GM Ned Colletti as a scout.

Colletti has an impressive resume as a talent evaluator in baseball, having spent 35 years around the game, including a stint as the assistant general manager for the Giants.

However -- and I don’t think I’m breaking any news here -- baseball and hockey are two very different sports with vastly different evaluation processes for prospects.

On the same day the organization brought back Joe Thornton for his 15th consecutive season with the Sharks, GM Doug Wilson has decided to go the unconventional route in seeking out additions to his front office.

"Ned has an extensive background working in professional sports and talent evaluation and he will bring a fresh perspective to our organization's evaluation process," Wilson said. "This was a unique opportunity to add someone of Ned's experience to our staff."

That’s a bold strategy, Doug. Hopefully, he can help bring more championships to San Jose than he did during his time in LA.
