SAN JOSE – The Sharks continued rewarding their young players for their hard work and contributions on Monday, announcing winger Marcus Sorensen signed a two-year contract extension.
“Marcus has impressed us with his hard work and dedication on the ice for the organization," Sharks’ general manager Doug Wilson said in a release from the team. "We feel that he will continue to evolve as a player and reach new a new level for our team."
The 26-year-old forward has certainly had a breakout campaign so far. Prior to the 2018-19 season, Sorensen recorded 11 points (six goals, five assists) in 41 career games spanning over two seasons with the Sharks. He split time with the AHL Barracuda, scoring 52 points in 66 games with the Sharks' top minor-league affiliate.
This season, Sorensen has already registered 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) through 47 games. Sorensen has spent the majority of the season playing alongside Joe Thornton, and has found a lot of success on the veteran’s wing. The Swede registered his first NHL career multi-point game playing with Thornton in San Jose’s 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 16. He was also responsible for setting up Thornton’s 400th career NHL goal on Nov. 14.

The extension carries an average annual value of $1.5 million per year, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. Sorensen could have become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Earlier this month, the Sharks signed forward Lukas Radil to a one-year contract extension. The details of that contract were not disclosed at the time, but it was reportedly worth $700,000, according to Cap Friendly.
The Sharks now have 14 players under contract for just over $57.5 million in 2019-20, per Cap Friendly. Defenseman Erik Karlsson and captain Joe Pavelski can become unrestricted free agents on July 1, while wingers Kevin Labanc and Timo Meier will hit restricted free agency for the first time.
