Three amazing stats from Timo's five-goal game in Sharks' win

In front of 10,705 fans at SAP Center on Monday afternoon, Sharks star Timo Meier had the game of his life.

Meier, the Sharks' lone All-Star this season, recorded a hat trick in the first period of San Jose's 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings, and that feat alone was pretty remarkable.

But Meier decided to add on and he wound up scoring two more goals in the second period, finishing with five total for the game. It marked the first time in Sharks franchise history that a player scored more than four goals in a game.

Regarding his first-period scoring barrage, Meier scored his three goals in the first 19:09 of the game, making it the fastest hat trick to start a game in Sharks franchise history, per NHL PR.

The Kings aren't accustomed to allowing five goals to one player in a game. In fact, per NHL PR, Meier's five-goal game was the first given up by LA since April 1, 1995, when Winnipeg Jets center Alex Zhamnov accomplished the feat.

Surprisingly, a five-goal game isn't as common as it might seem. Per NHL PR, Meier is just the fifth player to light the lamp five times in a game (regular season or playoffs) in the last 25 years, joining New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad (March 5, 2020), Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine (Nov. 24, 2018), Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen (Feb. 2, 2011) and Minnesota Wild forward Marian Gaborik (Dec. 20, 2007).

Meier and his Sharks teammates admitted after the game they wanted him to shoot the puck as much as possible in order to get a potential sixth goal. There hasn't been a six-goal game in the NHL since Feb. 7, 1976, when Darryl Sittler did it for the Toronto Maple Leafs. There have been seven six-goal games in NHL history, while the record for goals in a game happened more than 100 years ago when Joe Malone scored seven times for the Quebec Athletic Club/Bulldogs on Jan. 31, 1920.

Meier wasn't able to join that group, but he won't complain about doing something no other Sharks players has ever done.

Meier has been the Sharks' most productive offensive player this season, a big reason he's headed to Las Vegas for the All-Star Game next month. He's now tied with Tomas Hertl for the team lead with 20 goals and he leads the team with 25 assists. His 45 points are 10 clear of Hertl's 35.
