Meier reflects on ‘special' franchise-record performance

Timo Meier already had put in three goals by the end of the first period of the Sharks' holiday clash with the Los Angeles Kings at SAP Center on Monday. The franchise's lone All-Star was not finished there, adding two more goals to set a Sharks record in a 6-2 rout.

"It's really special," Meier told NBC Sports California's Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda during his postgame interview. "It's great to do it in front of our fans and it's such a great group of guys and to get this win, it means a lot."

Meier got all five of his goals in just two periods, making him the 10th player in NHL history to do so, and the first since Washington Capitals star Peter Bondra in 1994.

Meier went out of his way to credit his teammates after the record-setting day, but Sharks coach Bob Boughner wanted to make sure Meier got his due.

The motto from those alongside Meier on the ice was simple: "Just keep shooting."

Meier was about as efficient as possible, becoming the third player with five-plus goals on six or fewer shot attempts.

The Sharks only needed 17 total shots to put in six goals, creating the worst shot differential in a Sharks home win in franchise history.

Perhaps Meier can build on this epic performance when the Sharks next take the ice in Seattle against the Kraken on Thursday.
