TEMPE, Ariz. — Blaine Gabbert will get his first start for the Arizona Cardinals when they play the Texans in Houston on Sunday.
Coach Bruce Arians announced the decision after Friday's practice.
Drew Stanton, the starter the last two games, bruised his knee early in the Thursday night loss to Seattle last week. He stayed in the game but has been limited in practice all week.
Arians said it will be a game-time decision as to whether Stanton or recently signed Matt Barkley would be Gabbert's backup.
Gabbert will be making his 41st NFL start. He has a 9-31 record. He signed with Arizona last offseason and was the third quarterback until Carson Palmer broke his arm against the Los Angeles Rams in London and was lost for the season.
Former 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert is reportedly remaining in the NFC West.
Gabbert will sign a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Gabbert, acquired in a 2014 trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars, started 13 games for the 49ers the past two seasons. He won the starting job at the beginning of last season but Colin Kaepernick replaced him after Gabbert struggled in five starts.
Last season, Gabbert completed just 56.9 percent of his pass attempts for 925 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. Christian Ponder replaced Gabbert as the team's backup quarterback for the final three games of the season.
Gabbert entered the NFL in 2011 as the No. 10 overall pick of the Jaguars.
He becomes the first 49ers quarterback of last season to sign elsewhere as a free agent. Kaepernick, Ponder and Thad Lewis, who spent last season on injured reserve, remain as unsigned free agents.
Blaine Gabbert may be staying within the NFC West.
The Cardinals are in talks with the former 49ers quarterback, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
Gabbert started five games for the 49ers last season.
His final start came against Arizona on Oct. 6 -- he completed 18 of 31 passes for 162 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed for 70 yards and a score.
Gabbert started eight games for San Francisco in 2015.
He entered the league as the 10th overall pick in 2011.
The 49ers play at Arizona in Week 4, and host the Cardinals in Week 9.
