UFC Fight Night Sacramento: Performance of the Night bonuses handed out

UFC Fight Night Sacramento: Performance of the Night bonuses handed out

History was made Saturday at Golden 1 Center. UFC Fight Night Sacramento now holds the record for the shortest amount of combined fight time in a main and co-main event.

But only one of those winners, Urijah Faber, earned a $50,000 bonus. Four fighters -- Faber, Josh Emmett, Andre Fili and Jonathan Martinez -- received the $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. Germaine de Randamie, who handed Aspen Ladd her first loss with a 16-second knockout, did not receive the bonus.

Faber came out of retirement and put on a show for the home crowd. "The California Kid" knocked out Ricky Simon in 46 seconds, and quickly went home to celebrate with his daughter, Cali.

Emmett, another member of Team Alpha Male fighting out of Sacramento, gave the crowd plenty to cheer about before Faber entered the octagon. The 34-year-old caught Mirsad Bektic with a right jab and knocked him out in the final minute of the first round.

Fili was the feel-good story of the night. Another Team Alpha Male fighter to go home victorious had someone special watching him in the crowd. The Sacramento native's father had been in prison for 17 years, and the first time he saw his son since, Fili knocked out Sheymon Moraes in the first round.

Martinez handed Team Alpha Male, which went 4-2 on the night, their first loss of the event. In the third round, he caught Pingyuan Liu with a violent knee to his head to knock him out.

Saturday night was jam-packed out memorable moments in Sacramento, and four fighters' bank accounts prove it.

For Urijah Faber, age really is just a number. Even at 40 years old.

Faber (35-10-0) was back in the octagon for the first time since retiring in December 2016 and only needed 46 seconds to beat 26-year-old Ricky Simon (15-2-0) on Saturday at Golden 1 Center in the co-main event at UFC Fight Sacramento. "The California Kid" hammered Simon with a right-hand jab and then it was off to the races for the hometown hero.

Faber, a +260 underdog by Caesar's Palace, earned his first win by knockout since 2007. The 46-second victory was the fastest in his UFC career. He now has the second-most bantamweight wins in UFC history.

"I love fighting for Sacramento," Faber said after his win. "Props to Ricky Simon. That kid is gonna be a terror in this weight class. He has the right mentality, but he's just not there yet. It takes time, baby. Experience."

Faber, a world-class wrestler, said he learned the right-hand jab from Song Yadong, a Chinese prophet who trains out of Team Alpha Male.

"He [Simon] had a big target there, not to be mean," Faber said. "I was like, 'I'm gonna hit this dude's head, for sure.'"

It doesn't sound like he's done, too. Faber called out Henry Cejudo and has his eyes on the bantamweight belt.

"I gotta get it now, before it's too late," Faber said about going for the championship belt.

Faber proved he's plenty capable of still fighting at 40 years old, and he could have more in his future.

Team Alpha Male takes centerstage with six fighters competing in the event. They're led by their fearless leader Urijah Faber, who is making his comeback fight against Ricky Simon.

The main event belongs to Folsom's Aspen Ladd. Coming in with an undefeated 8-0-0 record, Ladd will face her toughest opponent yet in Germaine de Randamie. Ladd did appear to have a rough time cutting weight, though, as she was visibly in pain to make the 135-pound mark as a bantamweight.
