KAT ‘extremely happy' for Wiggins' NBA All-Star selection

Andrew Wiggins is officially a starter in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.

A bitter-sweet sentence to read if you're a fan of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The NBA announced starters for the Feb. 10 All-Star game at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, where Wiggins will make his first appearance in his eight-year NBA career.

After the Warriors' 124-115 win over the Timberwolves on Thursday night at Chase Center, former teammate Karl-Anthony Towns expressed how happy he is for his former teammate.

"I think that is beautiful," Towns said when asked about Wiggins' All-Star selection. "I told him on the court, I think everyone saw it, I was extremely happy for him to be named an All-Star. I told him that his day was coming. Even the last time we played the Warriors I said 'I can't wait to see you as an All-Star, I can't wait to see you in Cleveland.' It's funny how the story comes full-circle, just telling him that I think he was going to make it. My vote was for him."

Wiggins and Towns played together for four and a half seasons on Minnesota teams that also featured NBA stars such as Jimmy Butler, Zach LaVine, Derrick Rose, Jamal Crawford and Ricky Rubio.

After being selected No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, Wiggins was immediately traded to Minnesota where he never quite lived up to expectations.

That is ... until he was traded to the Warriors midway through the 2019-2020 season.

"I just want to see my teammates be great," Towns added. "If I've shown anything in my career it's that I'm able to put my pride to the side in the betterment of others. I love that my teammates -- regardless of whether they're former or current -- are doing well. It's a bond you build, we went to wars together out there, we prepared for these games. There's a lot of blood, sweat and tears for each other and I just want him to see the fruits of his labor and I'm glad that he's able to see that today."

Wiggins has established himself as one of the better two-way players in the NBA and has since thrived in two combined seasons with Golden State.

In two weeks, Wiggins will take the court alongside Warriors superstar Steph Curry in his first career NBA All-Star game and his former teammates could not be more proud.
