Why Myers calling Bucks now on Giannis would be ‘offensive'

The Milwaukee Bucks' season ended in disappointing fashion, and Giannis Antetokounmpo is under contract only for one more year.

It's no secret that a number of teams -- including the Warriors -- hope the 25-year-old superstar declines the supermax extension that's surely coming his way this fall so they can pursue him in free agency in 2021.

But is it possible that some franchises are touching base with the Bucks' front office right now about a possible trade? Are there "unwritten rules" preventing that from happening?

"I'll tell you one thing -- [Golden State general manager] Bob Myers is not calling [Bucks GM] Jon Horst over the weekend about Giannis [laughter]," ESPN's Bobby Marks said Thursday on "The Ryen Russillo Podcast." "He is not. And if he is, shame on him.

"Especially for a guy like Giannis -- franchise-level player -- [who] has not given any inclination that he wants out.

"I guess we can call them the 'Giannis rules.' You are not calling to see what his availability is. I think it's offensive to do that. If anything, it's Jon Horst making the phone calls. And knowing Jon -- when you have this type of player -- you're not going to do that. You let this play out.

"Does that change during the season [if] they get off to a slow start? Maybe. But right now, I don't see blood in the water for you to make that phone call."

The expectation is that the Bucks absolutely will not part ways with the 2019-20 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, unless he demands to be traded. And according to Giannis, "that's not happening."

But if Milwaukee believes the soon-to-be two-time NBA MVP will leave after next season, should management at least listen to potential offers?

When Russillo mentioned how perhaps "somebody under Myers calls someone underneath Horst" to "kick the tires," Marks acknowledged that definitely could transpire as we get closer to the NBA draft.

"But I don't think it's happening in the second week of September right now," he said.

It's very safe to assume that based on their salary cap situation, the Warriors -- who possess the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft and the Minnesota Timberwolves' top-three protected 2021 first-rounder -- hope they get the opportunity to present a trade proposal to the Bucks this offseason.

They still would have a chance at the Greek Freak in free agency, but they would need significant roster changes to make it happen.
