"That would require people to know the game of basketball, and most people don't."
That was Draymond Green's response to a question from NBC Sports Bay Area's Kerith Burke regarding whether people have an appreciation for quality defensive play in the NBA. The Warriors forward isn't the only NBA star calling out those who don't truly understand the game, as Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal also spoke out Sunday on so-called "box score fans."
As the NBA has grown worldwide and become a multi-billion dollar industry, online discourse about the game has skyrocketed around the world.
Players like Draymond, Beal and Lillard are guys who don't just play the game for a living, but they also have a passion for the sport.
Understandably, they just want to see the finer aspects of the game, like Draymond mentioned with defense, analyzed properly by those who cover and report on the sport.
We've seen current players get more involved with media coverage of the NBA in recent years, and perhaps more collaboration on that front will lead to more well-rounded coverage of basketball in general.
