Draymond Green admits contract speculation would have become headache

Warriors forward Draymond Green could have become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

But in early August, he signed a four-year extension worth $99.7 million. The three-time NBA champion -- who potentially left tens of millions of dollars on the table -- now is under contract for the next five seasons, and there won't be any speculation about his future with the organization.

Last year, the incessant chatter about Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson's pending free agency was arguably the biggest theme of the season. Many people were more interested in their decisions than actual basketball.

At Warriors Media Day on Monday, Draymond was asked if the rampant speculation that loomed over the Dubs played a role in his decision to commit long-term to the franchise.

"A little bit. I didn't want to come into this season dealing with all of that stuff. Kind of becomes a headache," the two-time All-NBA selection told reporters. "So, it definitely played a little part in it.

"And just understanding what was best for myself and my family and for this organization. I think I've said it a million times now I want to be here for my entire career.

"What makes that possible? What makes that more realistic? I think this did. Just really wanting to put it behind me and move forward."

The incident on the bench between KD and Draymond on Nov. 12 in LA certainly would fall into the "headache" category. And it happened mainly because frustration boiled over due to the noise surrounding Durant's contract situation.

All that "stuff" now is in the rearview mirror, allowing Green and the Warriors to focus on the present and future.
