ESPYs host Steph issues hilarious warning to attendees

Steph Curry is taking on a new challenge Wednesday night as the host of the 2022 ESPYs. And he plans on making the most out of it.

During the celebrity American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course earlier this month, Curry discussed grabbing the mic at the annual award show and sent a funny warning to all the great athletes in attendance.

"Everybody be careful, if you want to come to the show, just know you're liable to catch a couple of strays," Curry joked. " ... There's some good ideas flowing. I wouldn't say I'm sitting by the computer writing one-liners all day, but definitely it will have my personality, my DNA in all the bits that we do and just the whole night. I'm excited."

In what to specifically expect from Curry's on-stage persona, he recently told Beth Harris of The Associated Press that his sense of humor is "all over the place," with his favorite comedians being Dave Chapelle and Kevin Hart. One of his favorite television series to watch is the Canadian sitcom "Schitt's Creek."

“I’ll try to channel all of them,” Curry said.

Curry himself has been nominated for three ESPYs -- best men’s athlete, best record-breaking performance and best NBA player. The Warriors are going up against the Chicago Sky, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Rams, Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia Bulldogs and Colorado Avalanche for the best team. His fellow Splash Brother, Klay Thompson, is one of four finalists for best comeback athlete.

But Curry's focus for Wednesday night is all about the microphone, not the hardware. He has reached out to former hosts of the event like Drake, who was the master of ceremonies in 2014, and Peyton Manning, who hosted in 2017.

"I actually talked to Peyton about it, just what the experience was like once the opportunity was thrown my way. He said, 'You'll love it,' " Curry said. "It's obviously out of my comfort zone. I'm excited about just the experience and having the mic on that kind of stage.

"But I do appreciate the honor. I do appreciate the stage that it is and respectfully honoring and celebrating amazing athletes from all different sports and all different backgrounds."

Curry's new hosting adventure begins at 5 p.m. PT Wednesday when the ESPYs air live on ABC.
