Lacob discusses Warriors' needs, possibly trading No. 2 pick

Warriors owner Joe Lacob is very involved in the franchise's NBA draft operations. He eats, sleeps and breathes basketball.

The three-time NBA champion understands how important the 2020 Draft is for the organization, and wants nothing more than to truly contend for the 2021 NBA title.

So is he willing to trade the No. 2 overall selection, or does he strongly prefer the front office stand pat?

"Well, we're not gonna know until right near the beginning of the draft," Lacob said Wednesday morning on ESPN's "First Take" show. "There's a lot going on. A lot discussions, but most of these things don't usually lead anywhere.

"We only need to like two players with the No. 2 pick -- and we do like at least two players -- we're likely to take that player.

"We of course could entertain a trade if it benefitted our team."

Based on all the information that has surfaced over the last couple of weeks, it sounds like the Warriors have received some offers but are waiting until the last minute before making a decision.

"We don't have all the information yet in terms of what teams would offer us, so that will factor into our decision making," executive vice president of basketball operations Kirk Lacob said Monday night. "And that probably will lead all the way up to draft day."

Golden State coach Steve Kerr in early October made it clear the Warriors need to get bigger and more athletic to have a chance to win the championship this season.

Joe Lacob agrees with that assessment.

"We do need more size and athleticism in general," he said Wednesday. "So I think that would be something that we would like to have. If you watch the Lakers, they're pretty darn physical. We need physicality and athleticism.

"But the truth is we're gonna take the best player that we can. We'll see who that is (smiles)."

And if the Warriors pass on a center like James Wiseman in the draft, they will be able to add size and bolster the frontcourt in free agency.
