Klay says he has made ‘huge strides' in Achilles rehab

The Warriors and Dub Nation likely are going to have to wait until some time in December for Klay Thompson to return to game action, based on the latest comments from president and general manager Bob Myers.

But the injured Warriors shooting guard still is making progress in his recovery from a torn right Achilles.

Thompson was out on his boat in the Bay again Friday and went live on Instagram, where he provided an update on his progress.

"Rehab is going very well," Thompson said. "I had a great day today. Made some huge strides. Got some jumpers up. It just feels good to get up and down the floor, man."

During an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area following the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery on June 22, Myers explained why the team hasn't set a specific timetable for Thompson's return.

"I think we'll have a better sense when training camp comes around," Myers said, "and there's a difference between if he's playing 5-on-5, which we think he will be by then, and then playing in an NBA game. And that's when we're going to have to figure out when the right time for that is. I think we've said on record, I don't think it'll be the first game of the season in October. Will it be Thanksgiving? Will it be Christmas? I think it's more likely December, but I don't know when.

"It's hard to gauge. It depends on how he meets all these hurdles of his rehab. But I do know this: the guy is in there every day, he's working his rear end off and he's thirsty. He's thirsty to get back on the court. He loves basketball. No doubt how much he can help us."

Thompson and the Warriors rightfully are being cautious with his rehab and return since he has missed the last two seasons with major lower leg injuries.

Based on reporting by The Athletic's Shams Charania, the NBA's schedule should return to a pre-pandemic timeline, meaning the 2021-22 season will begin at the end of October. If that's the case and Thompson isn't expected back until December, he would miss at least the first five or six weeks of the season.

While Thompson is itching to get back on the court as soon as he can, he knows he needs to take it slow to make sure he doesn't suffer any setbacks in either his surgically repaired left ACL or right Achilles.
