Klay out with left knee soreness; Warriors not too concerned

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sunday night marks the seven-year anniversary since Klay Thompson found a mode unknown to mankind at the time, setting an NBA record by scoring 37 points in one quarter. He'll have to celebrate from the bench.

Thompson is a late scratch against the Utah Jazz, coach Steve Kerr announced a little over an hour and a half before tipoff.

"He's got a little knee soreness, so we're not going to play him tonight and he'll just be day-to-day," Kerr said.

The soreness is in Thompson's surgically repaired left knee, the same he tore his ACL in during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals. This will be the first time that Thompson has missed a game due to soreness with his knee or Achilles since making his return on Jan. 9.

Thompson currently is not playing both games of a back-to-back and sat Friday night's win over the Houston Rockets.

"Nothing too concerning," Kerr said of Klay's knee. "It's just part of the cautiousness we've shown."

Kerr said Thompson expected to play Sunday night, but trainer Rick Celebrini advised the Warriors to be careful and not play the five-time All-Star with what he called "a little bit of a tweak in the knee."

Klay has played six games after missing the previous two and half years to a torn ACL and torn Achilles. He is averaging 14.7 points while playing 21.3 minutes per game.
