Boat zen Klay apologizes, declares bandwagon fans ‘are a good thing'

Golden State Warriors fans love Klay Thompson because he wears his emotions on his sleeve.

The last 24 hours perfectly encapsulates those real vibes he embraces as his life mantra.

Yesterday, the iconic Splash Brother had harsh words for Warriors’ bandwagon fans. Justifiably so. The Warriors dynasty does not exist without Klay Thompson - three-time NBA champion, five-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA Third Team, and playoff moments etched in NBA folklore like Game 6 Klay. And opponents like Giannis Antetokounmpo root for him.

After some reflection, and hopefully a good night’s sleep, Klay went to his happy place this morning - his boat. He spontaneously riffed on Instagram Live from the Bay, apologizing to fair-weather folks that are a part of Dub Nation.

“Bandwagon fans are a good thing,” Thompson quipped. “That means you have turned people over to your style of play. So sorry if I offended anybody. That was not my intention. We welcome all Warrior fans from around the globe.”

It’s easy to dismiss bandwagon fans, but that’s a badge of honor in sports when you revolutionize the game. Klay Thompson, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green made the Warriors a dynasty by playing a style of basketball that had never existed. That naturally will make them a global phenomenon.

And this is the first time Klay Thompson has ever faced the dark side of social media, where all of the trolling and criticism originates. But as Steve Kerr said, he vows to “ride with Klay forever.”

Warriors fans, even the bandwagon ones, should wholeheartedly agree.
