Kellerman gives wildly controversial Steph-Trae take

Share

Trae Young was sensational Wednesday night in the Atlanta Hawks' win over the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

The No. 5 overall pick from the 2018 draft racked up 48 points (17-for-34 from the field, 4-for-13 on 3s), 11 assists and seven rebounds.

And his performance led to the following topic on ESPN's "First Take" show Thursday morning -- Is Trae Young's ceiling higher than Steph Curry's?

"Yeah. In the playoffs -- which is the only thing I care about," Max Kellerman said. "He's fearless under pressure. Steph is careless under pressure.

"Steph shimmy's in the regular season, Trae shimmy's in the playoffs. Our job is to tell it like it is. Steph -- this year -- got sent packing playing in a play-in game because in overtime [he had] zero points in the last 3:30.

"Trae is Steph Curry, but in the playoffs -- he elevates when it counts."

Kellerman also played some of his favorite old hits -- mentioning Steph's careless turnover in the closing minutes of Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, and reminding everybody that the three-time NBA champion does not have an NBA Finals MVP on his résumé.

Kellerman did not mention this:

Stephen A. Smith responded in hilarious fashion.

"You do have this knack for just annoying the living hell out of me," he said. "To the point where I'm really gonna have a conversation with the bosses about I think I need to be paid more for having to talk basketball with you."

Just amazing.

"You act like Steph chokes in the postseason for crying out loud, which is completely false, untrue and just an uneducated basketball synopsis," he added.

Smith completely is correct about this.

Has Steph had some bad/below average games in the playoffs/Finals? Yes. No question. But that can be said for all of the all-time greats.

The two-time NBA MVP also has registered a whole bunch of incredible performances:

There are plenty of others as well.

Ultimately, if Kellerman wants to take the incredibly bold stance and say that Trae -- who is doing unbelievable things at 22 years old -- has a higher ceiling than Steph, he is entitled to that opinion. Whatever.

The problem is the way he tries to disparage the only unanimous MVP in NBA history in the process.

It's silly and unnecessary.

Let's move on.
