NBA agents split on whether Warriors will trade No. 2 pick

The Warriors are a month away from going on the clock in the 2020 NBA Draft, but their plans still are relatively unknown.

With no generational talent atop this class, many expect the Warriors, who own the No. 2 overall selection, to find a trade partner and move back to collect more assets and still be able to draft the player they think will help them the most as they try to vault back into NBA title contention.

Even the most plugged-in people in the league are split on what they think president of basketball operations Bob Myers will do with the pick. The Athletic talked to a number of NBA agents about the biggest questions around the league. When it came to what the Warriors would do with the No. overall pick, 11 agents believe Golden State will trade the selection.

“If I had to bet, they’re going to trade it and move back to the late lottery," one agent told The Athletic. "Look at the teams (Nos.) 9 to 14 and go from there. Regardless, I don’t see Golden State drafting at two, especially in this draft. Picks 1 to 5, you have no idea.”

One agent suggested the Warriors might try and trade the pick for a young star who would be more beneficial than James Wiseman or Anthony Edwards.

"Trade it for another star," the agent said. "They should be in a win-now mindset. There’s not a rookie, even Anthony Edwards or James Wiseman, that is actually guaranteed to be great. Trade that pick. What about Brooklyn for Jarrett Allen? He’s a rebounder and shot-blocker who runs the floor, and that’s what they need.”

While the majority of the agents expect the Warriors to trade the pick, six believe they will stand pat and make a selection at No. 2.

“Anthony Edwards if he’s on the board," an agent said of what the Warriors will do at No. 2. "I don’t like LaMelo Ball there. I’d go with another guard, but James Wiseman would give them a cheap center. I think they keep the pick because they need to keep salaries low. Any 7-footer in the middle works. Just be able to tie your shoes. Don’t have to do much else.”

We've heard the Warriors connected to just about every prospect over the last six months. They reportedly are looking to draft a wing and are high on the likes of Deni Avdija, Tyrese Haliburton, Obi Toppin and Devin Vassell.

Wiseman, Edwards and Ball are seen as the top three prospects in the draft class, but each comes with warts the Warriors might not want to overlook at No. 2 overall.

Trading down would be preferable. The Warriors must find a team that is high on one of the top three prospects in order to facilitate a move down the board.
