Report: Warriors believe Mitchell could be available at No. 14

The 2021 NBA Draft is less than a week away, and the rumors are heating up.

Will the Warriors trade both of their lottery picks in a blockbuster transaction for Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal?

If they don't strike a deal, might they snag Davion Mitchell with the No. 7 overall selection?

"It's a very popular pick in mock drafts to have Davion Mitchell going to the Warriors," The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor said Friday on The Mismatch podcast. "I've been told that the Warriors believe Mitchell could be available at No. 14 -- their second first-round draft pick."

It's well documented that various members of Golden State's front office don't believe the organization should select Mitchell at No. 7.

The rationale is that you should take a prospect in that spot who has more star potential and/or a higher ceiling.

"I've been a Davion Mitchell guy for a really long time, but the track record of 22-year-old and older prospects really making their mark in the NBA is slim," draft analyst Chad Ford said recently. "You're much safer taking an 18-year-old or 19-year-old ... the odds are in your favor that you're taking the wrong guy at No. 7 if they're 22 years old."

Mitchell -- who is 6-foot-1.25 inches with shoes on -- will turn 23 years old in September.

The Baylor guard averaged 14.0 points, 5.5 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals as a redshirt junior last season, while shooting 51 percent overall and 44.7 percent from beyond the arc.

He was the national defensive player of the year and led the Bears to the national championship.

"Fail is a hard word to use, but some guys fail in the NBA," college basketball analyst Jay Bilas told Warriors radio broadcaster Tim Roye. "He's not going to [fail]. His heart is gigantic.

"He's a worker and I think he'll be a big-time player."
