NBA rumors: Andre Iguodala won't report to Grizzlies, who seek trade

Andre Iguodala is a member of the Grizzlies ... sort of.

It appears the former Warrior and 2015 NBA Finals MVP will never suit up for Memphis.

Chris Herrington of the Daily Memphian has the details:

Andre Iguodala will not attend Grizzlies’ Media Day on Monday nor report to the team's training camp under an arrangement reached between the two sides, according to team and league sources.

The team agreed the veteran can continue private workouts at a location of his choosing while Memphis pursues trades involving the former Golden State Warrior and NBA Finals MVP.

There is a mutual understanding, per sources, that the situation may not reach a resolution until well into the season.

Sounds like a pretty sweet situation for Iguodala, who will make just under $17.2 million this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The Warriors were forced to trade the 35-year-old (in addition to what most likely will be their 2024 first-round draft pick) in the Kevin Durant-D'Angelo Russell sign-and-trade transaction back in early July.

Shortly thereafter, there were rumors that Iguodala would secure a buyout with Memphis and be able to sign with the team of his choice. But don't count on that.

The Grizzlies obviously would prefer to acquire an asset in a trade, and Iguodala told NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Poole on Sunday that he doesn't want to surrender any cash:

“At this point, the only buyout that makes sense -- if I’m speaking on someone else’s behalf, thinking as an agent -- is you don’t leave money on the table. Especially in this league. Because you’ll never get it back, no matter what people say.

Negotiations are a tactic, so you’ve got to be careful how you approach it, or how you verbalize what you would do going forward. But you can’t leave anything on the table.”

Note to Bay Area residents: Since it probably will be months before the situation is fully resolved, you just might run into Iguodala at a driving range and/or golf course near you.
