Report: Morey out as Rockets GM after years as Warriors rival

The Houston Rockets have been looking for their next coach since Sept. 13 when Mike D'Antoni announced he would not be returning.

The franchise also will have a new general manager soon.

Daryl Morey is stepping down from the position he held since May 2007, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

"In the aftermath of Houston's elimination from the NBA's restart, Morey approached owner Tilman Fertitta with the idea of leaving the job and the sides quietly worked through an exit agreement," Woj writes. "The Rockets are planning to promote executive vice president of basketball operations Rafael Stone to general manager."

The Warriors eliminated Morey and the Rockets from the playoffs four times over a five-year span from 2015 to 2019.

"It's the only thing we think about," Morey said in December 2017. "I think I'm not supposed to say that, but we're basically obsessed with 'How do we beat the Warriors?' "

Houston came very close to eliminating Golden State in the 2018 Western Conference finals, but the Warriors won the final two matchups after falling behind in the series three-games-to-two.
