NBA rumors: Kawhi Leonard called Kevin Durant first to join Clippers

Kawhi Leonard recruited Paul George to join the Clippers with him.

Board Man got the job done.

But George was not Leonard's first choice.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN has the details:

Kevin Durant was getting ready to commit to the Brooklyn Nets, along with his good friends Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan. Then Durant got a call from Kawhi Leonard, asking if he'd consider teaming up with him and signing with the LA Clippers. They'd be a great complement to each other, Leonard told Durant.

He'd always admired him and had tremendous respect for him as a competitor.  Durant was flattered and more than a little stunned, according to sources close to the situation. He didn't know Leonard that well, so getting a recruiting call like that made a real impression.

It's unclear how serious Durant -- a two-time NBA Finals MVP with the Warriors -- considered joining forces with Kawhi -- a two-time NBA Finals MVP.

But we heard reports throughout the season that the Clippers' grand plan was to land both superstars.

They came up short in that endeavor, but it's safe to say they still won the summer.

The Dubs will face Kawhi, PG-13 and the Clippers four times a year, and must-see TV is an understatement.

Next season can't get here soon enough.
