NBA rumors: Players won't be drug tested during coronavirus shutdown

The NBA season has been suspended indefinitely because of the coronavirus shutdown.

But that doesn't mean the news comes to a screeching halt.

The latest information comes from Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association have reached an agreement to not subject players to drug testing during the hiatus caused by the coronavirus, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Players typically undergo “six random, unannounced urine drug tests during each season and off-season,” as stated in Article XXXIII of the collective bargaining agreement.

This rare agreement is only temporary, sources said.

We are not going to speculate on what this agreement might mean in regards to behavior.

But we will remind you that former Warriors forward Al Harrington recently told NBC Sports' Tom Haberstroh that he believes "80 percent of NBA players consume cannabis in some form."

The article published by Haberstroh and NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Poole nearly three weeks ago includes the following anecdote:

“When I came to the team, I was already smoking,” Stephen Jackson said. “I had hooked up with Matt (Barnes) and he was the one who was already smoking over there. Me and Matt had hooked up instantly. (Marijuana) just went through the team.”

Jackson tells the story of a time in Utah when, after Warriors guard Baron Davis took the final drug test of the season, coach Don Nelson began high-fiving him along with his teammates, “like, yeah, y’all can smoke freely now! (Nelson) accepted it.”

“Me and Don Nelson stayed in the same building,” Jackson said. “I stayed on the 11th floor. He stayed on the roof. I had the whole building smelling like weed. He definitely knew. As long as we were playing well, he didn’t give a f--- what we were doing.”
