NBA rumors: Warriors to offer Klay Thompson max contract as free agency opens

As expected, the Warriors aren't going to mess around with Klay Thompson.

The All-Star guard will become an unrestricted free agent Sunday, and the Warriors plan to pay him handsomely to stick around, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday. That is expected to "accelerate" the process of Thompson agreeing to stay in the Bay Area.

Thompson has been a key piece of the Warriors' dynastic run, and Golden State is wise not to attempt to offer Thompson less than the max contract.

The Washington State product tore his left ACL in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, but returned to the court to make both his free throws and attempted to stay in the game. He is expected to be out until at least February of next year.

With Thompson reportedly set to rejoin the Dubs, general manager Bob Myers now must turn his attention to convincing Kevin Durant to also stay in The Bay.
