Report: Warriors, several teams interested in signing Oubre

Kelly Oubre Jr.'s first season with the Warriors could be his only in the Bay Area. But he appears to be a hot commodity ahead of free agency.

As previously reported, Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer reported Monday that the Warriors do have interest in re-signing Oubre this summer. Fischer also reported, citing sources, that several San Antonio Spurs players are interested in adding Oubre, and New York Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau also reportedly has an interest in bringing Oubre to the Big Apple.

One other Western Conference team mentioned in Fischer's report is the Dallas Mavericks, who approached the Warriors about a possible Kristaps Porzingis-for-Oubre swap ahead of the NBA trade deadline. However, that was with a previous regime, as the Mavericks are going through changes in their front office and coaching staff.

The Warriors acquired Oubre from the Oklahoma City Thunder after finding out Klay Thompson would miss the entire season with a torn Achilles. Oubre, 25, had an up-and-down season with Golden State, averaging 15.4 points and 6.0 rebounds over 55 games before his season ended short to a wrist injury in his shooting hand.

"It would be great to have Kelly back," coach Steve Kerr told reporters after the season. "He's really, really talented. Obviously it was tricky at times, like finding the exact right role."

General manager Bob Myers believes Oubre would like to stay in the Bay for more than one season.

"He did make it clear he'd like to be here," Myers said. "He did say that."

Oubre likely would have to move into a Sixth Man role if he returns to the Warriors with Klay's healthy return. But Thompson might not be ready for the start of next season, and the Warriors don't want to rush him back.

The Warriors do own Oubre's Bird Rights. He presents an intriguing sign-and-trade opportunity where hypothetically the Warriors could send Oubre and a second-round pick to a team for a traded player exception. Oubre cannot be traded until the new league year begins on Aug. 3.

Oubre certainly had an interesting first season with the Warriors, and his free agency should bring plenty of intrigue as well.
