Report: Warriors will try signing Poole to multiyear extension

The Warriors will soon be faced with some difficult financial decisions.

With Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green accounting for a large piece of the pie that is Golden State's present and future payroll, the Warriors will look to lock up one of their young stars this offseason.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Connor Letourneau reported that the Warriors will try to sign third-year guard Jordan Poole to a multiyear extension this summer.

"The Warriors also will try to sign Poole to a multiyear extension this summer, which would allow them to avoid having to deal with him in restricted free agency in 2023," Letourneau writes. "Keith Smith, a salary-cap expert for Spotrac, estimates that deal to be in the four-year, $80 million range."

As Letourneau mentions, signing Poole now will create one less headache for the Warriors in 2023, where they will already be strapped for cash and facing a possible max contract situation for Andrew Wiggins, who is an unrestricted free agent after the 2022-23 season.

It's estimated that Wiggins will command somewhere in the range of $37 million annually in 2023-24 if signed to a max contract. That is on top of Curry, Thompson and Green's contracts, which will account for $122.7 million that season.

Poole started at guard throughout the first half of the season until Thompson returned to the court in early January, while still maintaining similar minutes in a role off the bench since then.

On the season, the 22-year-old has averaged career-highs in points (16.4), field goal percentage (43.8) and free-throw shooting percentage (92.2). He'll likely be in the conversation for the Sixth Man of the Year award after his breakout campaign this season.

If the Warriors hope to maintain the exciting young core they have quickly established in just a few years, they'll have to start by locking down their young guard sooner rather than later.
