Peter Guber's Warriors 2015 ring earns $80K for coronavirus relief

The 2014-15 NBA season always will have a special place in the hearts of Warriors players, fans and personnel. Golden State took down LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals, giving the Warriors their first championship since moving to the Bay Area.

Some (most) things are bigger than basketball, though, and Warriors co-owner showed that by auctioning off his 2015 championship ring for coronavirus relief. The bidding was part of Fanatics’ “All-In Challenge."

Bidding for Guber's ring began at $50,000 and ended at $80,000 on Tuesday night. The ring first was appraised for $13,000. It certainly wasn't easy for Guber to give up, either.

“I was asked if I was willing to give up something that really meant something to me that would be valuable,” Guber told NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Poole last week from him home in Los Angeles. “I thought about it. I didn’t want to give up my first Oscar. But winning the NBA championship, that first ring, which was the one I wore, I thought, ‘OK. This means a lot to me.’ That was it.

“So, hopefully somebody else would cherish it and put money in that would give a lot to some people that really, really, really need it.”

Guber still owns his championship rings for 2017 and 2018. He hopes his act pushes others to help the relief efforts if they're able to do so.

“This was, for me, to align and motivate others to do something similar and hopefully create a groundswell,” Guber told Poole.
