Rockets GM Daryl Morey looks ahead to next season: ‘I think to take down Golden State…'

The Rockets won a league-best 65 games last season.

They were the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

And according to Daryl Morey, being the top seed entering the playoffs is paramount.

"I think the main thing is that getting the 1 seed is important, so we’re going to be shooting for that again," Houston's GM told Michael Knight of Space City Scoop. "I think to take down Golden State, which is arguably the best team that’s ever played NBA basketball, you’re probably going to need homecourt."

There's a problem, though.

The Rockets lost Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute -- two instrumental players -- and thus far have added Michael Carter-Williams and James Ennis.

All signs point to Houston adding Carmelo Anthony, which is subtraction by addition in the eyes of many.

Morey is a terrific GM and he will most likely find a way to improve the Rockets by the trade deadline. But as currently constructed, it's doubtful that Houston will earn the top seed in the West in 2018-19.

But that's obviously not the mindset of the reigning NBA Executive of the Year.

"We do think the 1 seed is important, so we’ll be shooting for that," Morey reiterated. "I think taking it one step at a time, that’s the next goal and to have a great regular season again to put ourselves in the best position to knock off all these tough Western Conference teams."
