Steph is Bay Area's ‘most revered athlete ever,' Spears claims

The Bay Area has seen its fair share of legends over the years.

From 49ers' wide receiver Jerry Rice to Giants' catcher Buster Posey, these players all have delivered championships to Bay Area teams, but Warriors' guard Steph Curry might top the list of all-time greats that have played in the region.

ESPN's NBA senior writer Marc J. Spears appeared on "NBA Today" on Tuesday, where he stated that Curry, who seems likely to spend his entire career with the Warriors, is the most revered athlete ever in the Bay Area.

"I think he's one of the people like Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki that plays an entire career," Spears said. "... I think even when Curry is in his last days, there'll be a lot of tears from Warriors fans like he is, to me, the most revered athlete ever, which is saying a lot for a place that has that Joe Montana and Jerry Rice and Ricky Henderson.

"He's the greatest ever. And so I see him finishing his career there. I see him living in the Bay, and I see him impacting Oakland for many decades to come ..."

Curry has delivered four NBA titles to the Bay Area, three when the organization played at Oracle Arena in Oakland and one this past 2021-22 season at Chase Center in San Francisco.

Additionally, the Warriors' star has gone on record saying he wants to remain in the Bay Area once his playing career is over while also giving back to the community.

"I can honestly say how special this place is," Curry told NBC Sports California's Glen Kuiper and Bip Roberts in August. "But also, there's a huge need here. We could really kind of tackle some of those challenges and do it in a meaningful way. Honestly, I don't want to leave, ever."

"I want this to be my one and only home. And even thinking about what happens when basketball is done; eventually, that will happen. That will still have roots here. We'll still have a presence here, and we'll still call this place home."

On the court, Curry is giving many in the Bay Area long-lasting memories they'll continue to cherish once his career is over. Nonetheless, his work off the court might make him the most revered player to play in the area.
