Steph now averaging more points than unanimous MVP season

Steph Curry is on a mission right now. As the Warriors fight for every win, Curry is diving for loose balls and making the 3-point arc look like a pregame layup line. He's playing at an MVP level, and the numbers don't lie.

Through 28 games, Curry now is averaging more points per game than his unanimous NBA MVP season in 2015-16. Curry averaged 30.06 points -- rounded up to 30.1 points -- when he took home the hardware for a second straight year. This season, he's averaging 30.14 points after dropping a game-high 36 points Monday night in the Warriors' win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He also is averaging 5.9 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game, and his 66.9 true shooting percentage is higher than it was in his unanimous MVP season.

Curry scored just 20 and 19 points in the first two games of the season. He has been on a tear ever since. In his last 10 games, Curry is averaging 34.5 points per game while shooting 58 percent from the field and 51.2 percent from deep while hoisting 12.1 3-point attempts per game.

Most experts have players like Joel Embiid, LeBron James and Nikola Jokic ahead of Curry in the early-season MVP race. All three suit up for teams with better records than the 15-13 Warriors. But is any player more valuable to his team than Curry is to the Warriors right now?

That's a question voters will have to ask themselves. Curry can make a loud statement for his MVP case over Golden State's next stretch of games, but there is no doubt he's looking up right now in the eyes of the experts.

Stats don't lie, though. Steph is playing better than ever, and there's no denying how incredibly valuable he is to this Warriors squad.
