Steph signing Warriors extension this summer sounds likely

Steph Curry was eligible to sign a three-year, $156 million contract extension with the Warriors before the season began.

But the three-time NBA champion -- who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2021-22 campaign -- did not put pen to paper before the deadline.

"It wasn't anything that was difficult. No hard conversation," president of basketball operations Bob Myers said last week on 95.7 The Game's "Steiny, Guru & Dibs" show. "It was just, 'Hey, let's talk about it at the end of the year.'

"So it's really whatever he's hoping to do and wants to do."

On that note, is Curry planning on re-upping with Golden State before next season begins?

"He's gonna sign an extension. He plans to be with the Warriors for four or five more years," The Athletic's Marcus Thompson said Tuesday on the "Warriors Plus Minus" podcast. "He would love a four-year extension.

"So that puts him on the team five more years after this."

So there you have it.

And if you're looking for additional context, here is what Thompson wrote Monday in a feature story on Curry: "He is on board with developing the youngsters, with controlled minutes, with the messaging of patience. Curry certainly isn’t kicking down GM Bob Myers’ door demanding better teammates or threatening to leave."

And during their conversation, Curry asked Thompson: "What does going all-in mean right now? Everybody’s saying push the chips all in right now, but what does that mean?”

That means trading James Wiseman, the very valuable Minnesota Timberwolves' 2021 top-three protected first rounder, Andrew Wiggins or Kelly Oubre and other assets for an established star veteran.

The problem for the fans and/or media members who want the front office to go in that direction is that no star is available at this moment in time. These people just assume that Bradley Beal or Pascal Siakam or Ben Simmons, etc. have been offered and the Warriors have said no.

And many league insiders are not expecting any of those aforementioned names to switch teams before the March 25 trade deadline.

But the circumstances very well could be different during the summer, when it sounds like Curry and the Warriors will agree to terms on a contract that puts the franchise icon one step closer to playing his whole NBA career in the Bay Area.
