Steph, Dubs excited for White House visit after past ‘drama'

For the first time in seven years, the Warriors will visit the White House during their upcoming road trip to be honored for winning the 2022 NBA Finals.

And despite what Steph Curry described as drama surrounding the event in the past, the reigning Finals MVP “absolutely” is looking forward to meeting with President Joe Biden.

“Excited about just the celebration of what we did last year,” Curry told reporters after the Warriors’ 125-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday at Chase Center. “It’s kind of like the one last moment to reflect on the accomplishment.

“We’ve all kind of turned a page on what this year really means, but it is a really special honor and, you know, all the -- what do I call it, drama? -- that we went through those two years that we skipped it and whatnot. So, definitely excited, our families are and we’ll enjoy the moment.”

The White House officially announced Golden State’s scheduled Jan. 17 visit on Friday, though NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole first reported in October that the team would stop by for the honor on that date after playing the Washington Wizards the day before.

The Warriors last visited the White House on Feb. 4, 2016, meeting with then-President Barack Obama after winning the 2015 NBA Finals. They didn’t go to the White House after winning it all in 2017, when then-President Donald Trump rescinded a potential invitation because Curry said he would vote not to go.

The Warriors ultimately met with a group of local youth at a private event instead after issuing a statement regarding the disagreement with President Trump. The combination of the former president in office and the COVID-19 pandemic kept NBA teams from visiting the White House, until the Milwaukee Bucks met with President Biden after their 2021 championship.

President Biden appears to be looking forward to meeting with the Warriors, too, as he posted a congratulatory message for Golden State after they hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the fourth time in eight seasons in June of last year.

Curry returned to the court Tuesday night after missing 11 games with a left shoulder injury, finishing with 24 points despite a slow start.

And as the Warriors try to defend their 2022 title with the second half of the season approaching, perhaps their White House visit this coming Tuesday will serve as the extra motivation they need.
