Steph's bizarre ‘pointing' pregame warm-up routine explained

Steph Curry is one of a kind.

From his handshakes with teammates to his celebrations after a big shot, the Warriors superstar brings a new level of peculiar swagger to the game of basketball. Even before the start of a game, Curry manages to wow crowds with unbelievable trick shots during warm-ups.

But if you’ve seen the eight-time All-Star warm up before, you might have noticed his bizarre ritual of pointing around with Warriors player development coach Bruce Fraser.

Fraser sat down with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Grant Liffmann on a recent Dubs Talk podcast to explain the meaning behind Curry's pregame routine and why the two find it so amusing.

“There’s a lot within that,” Fraser told Liffmann. “We add sometimes. It’s usually an acknowledgment of a friend of his that had given a speech at a college and it’s kind of making fun of the friend’s speech. He was asked a question by the panel at the college, and instead of answering the question, he gave a shout-out to the school first and said, ‘Can you wait?’ So we say, ‘Hold on a minute,’ then we give a shout-out.”

How typical of Curry to pretty much turn nothing into something.

And in true Steph Curry fashion, he’s having fun with it.

“We have a mic in our hand because he had a mic and he’s pointing to the crowd, and then we’ll add stuff sometimes if other people are at the game and we want to [give them a] shout-out. So, it’s not always the same," Fraser said. "And Steph’s funny in that way, but even big games or there’s certain things that we do or humor that we have throughout the season that Steph carries in a light-hearted way, even in big moments.

“And it’s not like the moment’s big before that game, but there’ll be games where the moment’s big, and that part is kind of cool and what makes him who he is. He’s able to have fun through it all, even in a slump. There’s no time where you say, ‘Stop the music, this isn’t going well.’ ”

It’s nice to see the greatest shooter of all time, whether he's coming off a 50-point game or stuck in a shooting slump, stay authentic throughout all the chaos the game might bring.
