Warriors give Zaza hard time about fastbreak vs Nuggets: ‘#TragicJohnson'

The Warriors' win on Sunday in Denver was full of highlights.

But the best one of them all came from an unexpected contributor.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Steph Curry deflected a Nuggets' pass. Zaza Pachulia gathered the loose ball and started up court. Instead of passing the ball to Curry, Pachulia raced Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray to the hoop.

And to the surprise of just about everyone watching, Pachulia won the race. He didn't dunk the ball, but he was able to lay the ball in to give the Warriors a 69-57 lead. The play caused Nuggets head coach Michael Malone to call a timeout.

"What's the story about I almost got a three-second violation on the fastbreak? That's the word? Wow," a smiling Pachulia said to reporters after the game. "I don't know what happened. Two non-athletic guys running in a fastbreak. Hopefull that stays in the history of basketball."

Pachulia was asked to describe his animated celebration as he headed back to the Warriors' bench.

"Just showing my handles," Pachulia said.

Head coach Steve Kerr was asked about Pachulia's fastbreak and while he took a jab at his starting center's speed, he expressed happiness for Pachulia.

"I was happy for Zaza because he does so much stuff for us that goes unnoticed and it was great to see him get some hoops. He had that transition basket that took about 14 seconds to develop. And then his reaction afterwards was just brilliant. He was mimicking his own ballhandling skills. I didn't really see that when it actually happened because he when he was imitating himself, he was doing all these inside out moves. I was thrilled for Zaza. He got some good minutes and got a good run," Kerr said.

Kevin Durant was excited to see Pachulia get in on the fun had by the highest-scoring team in the NBA.

"Never seen that one before. But happy to finally Zaza was able to get out in the open court. He's not used to that with us. I was hoping he'd dunk the ball, but he's a below the rim player. That kind of got us going a little bit," Durant told reporters after the game.

As for Pachulia's best buddy on the team, Klay Thompson used Instagram to get a few shots in.

"Great road trip back to the bay we go!! 1st buuuuuuuuuuuuuusssssss!! #ZaZaonthebreak #tragicjohnson," Thompson wrote in connection with a photo of the Warriors on the plane ahead of their trip back to the Bay Area.
