Warriors' Mychal Mulder reveals he's named after Klay Thompson's dad

Only two humans named "Mychal" have ever played in the NBA.

It's a very unique spelling, so it makes sense that the younger, current player would be named after the older, retired player.

"Growing up, I was a big Lakers fan thanks to my dad, and obviously, he was really huge into the Lakers, and yeah, he named me after Klay's dad," Warriors guard Mychal Mulder said on "SNC: Warriors Edition" after the team's win over the 76ers on Saturday night. "So obviously, Klay is someone that I follow closely with my game, and just honored to be in the locker room with these guys."

Yes, 25-year-old Mychal Mulder is named after former Lakers center Mychal Thompson.

And now Mulder is teammates with Thompson's son, Klay.

It really is a small world.

While Thompson played in 935 games over 12 NBA seasons, Mulder is just starting to carve out his career. He's currently playing on a 10-day contract with the Warriors, which is set to expire soon, but coach Steve Kerr indicated after Saturday's game that he'd like to have Mulder back.

"Mychal is fantastic," Kerr told reporters at Chase Center. "A really good player. Good defensively as well, and we're lucky to have him. Anxious ... I know this was the final day of his 10-day, but we're anxious to get him back some way, so I'm sure that's going to happen."

In the final game of that first 10-day contract, Mulder got the start, and scored 18 points and dished out three assists.

We'll likely find out in the next day or so if Kerr got his wish and Mulder is back with the Warriors.
