Steph cracks top-10 of Basketball-Reference NBA MVP tracker

Steph Curry continues to garner more attention in the race for the NBA MVP.

Basketball-Reference has an MVP tracker that utilizes past voting trends and data to project who is among the top candidates for the award, and Curry cracked the top 10 of the list after his 40-point outing in the Warriors' win over the Orlando Magic on Thursday night.

Curry was asked about the building hype around his credentials for MVP, but said he wants to just let his game speak for itself.

"The game speaks for itself," Curry told reporters after the win vs. the Magic. "Those two [MVP] years is the exact same kind of conversation. Obviously, that's an amazing accomplishment, and being in that conversation with all that we've been through these last two years, that means something. Those narratives make themselves as you go throughout the season, and my job is obviously just be at the level that I expect to be, and usually that means you're at the top at the end of the season.

"I really try not to get distracted by that because it kind of taints the moment. And really right now, if I'm doing my job, then I'll be there at the end of the season, and that will take care of itself."

Fox Sports 1's Nick Wright called it "outrageous" on Friday morning for Curry to be among the top candidates for NBA MVP, given the Warriors'  record and place in the Western Conference standings (14-12, eighth).

Curry is averaging over 35 points a game in his last eight contests, and unquestionably is playing some of the best basketball of his career.

Any conversation about the NBA MVP is premature at this stage of the season, as the second half of the 2020-21 schedule hasn’t even been released yet.

But clearly Curry's remarkable numbers are starting to turn heads, and he can continue to build up his case as the season wears on.
