Why Dorell Wright believes LaMelo fits Warriors perfectly

If the Warriors keep the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and if LaMelo Ball is available when they are on the clock, will he be their selection?

Nobody knows the answer to that question at this point.

But we do know that ex-Golden State forward Dorell Wright is a believer.

"I've been a big LaMelo Ball fan since he was an eighth grader," Wright recently explained on the "WarriorsWorld" podcast. "I saw the potential a long time ago. I think he's gonna be one of the better players in the draft.

"You talk about high basketball IQ, somebody that's marketable, somebody that has a big upside. A lot of people are gonna be surprised."

What does Wright think about Ball's fit on the Warriors specifically?

"I like it," he said. "The best thing about him is he's always played with guys better than him. Most guys don't get that opportunity. You usually dominate all high school and you're always the best player (since) middle school.

"Even when he went to Australia, he was playing with guys a little bit better than him -- a little more mature. So I think he fits in perfect with a team like the Warriors, who provide shooting (and) playmaking.

"He can play with the ball (or) without the ball. He definitely fits. He just has to buy in on the defensive end."

Ah yes, the ever-so-important caveat about defense.

"Indifferent defender for much of his career," ESPN's Jonathan Givony wrote about Ball. "Still reverts back to that frequently, especially off the ball. Struggles to get over screens due to his lack of strength. Has been maligned at times for his work ethic and level of focus."

Those are legitimate concerns, and is why various reports have said that some NBA executives don't view Ball as a top-10 pick, let alone the first player taken.

Yet several mock drafts have the 6-foot-7 guard going No. 1 overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Buckle up.
