Why Steph Curry's epic second half vs. Rockets was ultimate bad beat

Steph Curry broke the hearts of people other than the Houston Rockets and their fans Friday night.

Curry scored 33 points in the Warriors' Game 6 win at Toyota Center, and all of that came in the second half. That led to some nervous moments for sports bettors down the stretch, as the over/under on Curry's night was set at 30.5 points, according to the Vegas Stats and Information Network.

The two-time NBA MVP had 29 points with as few as 12 seconds remaining in the NBA playoff second-round series clincher. Rockets guard Austin Rivers then fouled Curry, and he stepped to the line to sink both of his free throws.

Anyone who bet the under had good reason. Curry had not scored more than 30 points since Game 1 of the first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 13, when he dropped 38. Surely, said bettors felt very assured when Curry had zero points in the first half. They still should have had an OK feeling until the Rockets started fouling to preserve what little time remained on the clock.

But Curry proved the doubters with money on the line -- and some prominent pundits -- wrong with a second-half performance for the ages. It was good enough to get his team into its fifth consecutive Western Conference finals, and to cost some gamblers some money.
