CJ CUP Matchups: Firm and Fast Stars

Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry

Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

Congaree Golf Club is designed to play firm and fast and Mother Nature seems to be cooperating this week, allowing us to likely see the course played the proper way.

That will be a change from the only other time we saw Congaree, when it hosted the 2021 Palmetto Championship which was hit with a lot of rain during the event to soften the conditions.

Let’s dive into some tournament matchups in hopes of taking advantage of the play style required to conquer the firm and fast conditions at Congaree.

Shane Lowry over Max Homa - Tournament Matchup (+115)

This play really leaps off the page, for a few reasons.

First, I have Lowry graded out roughly a shot better than Homa, over the course of four rounds. That’s a great start for the plus-money side of the matchup.

Then, we look at last season’s overlapping rounds and see that Lowry got the better of Homa in 18-13-3. Again, advantage to Lowry.

Last, we have Homa just weeks away from joining the New Dad’s Club. There are a lot of potential distractions as you draw closer and closer to that delivery date so I will gladly take the other side of the matchup and back the Irishman.

Tommy Fleetwood over Adam Hadwin - Tournament Matchup (-120)

I typically lean to the side of the plus-money matchup but this matchup was too juicy to ignore.

Without any serious rain in the forecast, Congaree is expected to play firm and fast, as designed. When you have generous fairways and sandy soil you can’t help but think of the connection to linksy layouts. There are few in the world with a better resume on links courses than Tommy Fleetwood.

Looking at last season’s data, Fleetwood won their round-by-round matchups 11-9-3 and I’d expect him to win this week’s matchup given the style of course laid out in front of them at Congaree Golf Club.
