Trae Young O/U 27.5 Points vs. 76ers

Trae Young made NBA playoff history when he scored 30 points in his first four road games. The only other player to do that in NBA history is Lew Alcindor, aka Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Not a bad name to be paired with.

Right now, I could conclude this article by saying ride the wave with “Ice Trae,” but to be honest, I have to tell you a few more valid points on why Young is balling.

Versus Philadelphia, Young has repeatedly made it rain. In his last six meetings, Young has been impressive, scoring in the minutes he has played.

These are eight of Young’s 10 total career meetings with the 76ers. Unfortunately, his first two starts during his rookie year were duds, so we will not include them.

Young has averaged 31.3 points per game over 33.5 minutes in those eight meetings. He scored 28 or more points in six of them.

In his career, Young averages 27.1 points per game versus the 76ers. Only three teams: the Blazers (27.2), Clippers (27.4) and Timberwolves (31.4), have surrendered more points to Young per game.

Per, Young has a hit rate of 64.9% (24/37) to the Over 27.5 points when he plays at least 35 minutes. That jumps to 71.4% (5/7) at 39-plus minutes on the season. The most intriguing number though, Young has hit the Over 27.5 in eight of the past 10 games (80%) when playing at least 35 minutes.

Young played 39 minutes in Game 1, giving him 80 total minutes in his last two games. In Young’s last five games at 39 or more minutes, he averages 29.2 points per game.

In only four games at 40 or more minutes, Young averages 31.8 points per game and hit the Over 3-of-4 (75%) times. We could see that, depending on how bad the Hawks want to go up 2-0 headed back to Atlanta.

I am sure Nate McMillan wants to stick around next year and Young has been advocate about bringing him back. Playing Young 40-plus minutes tonight is a good way of keeping both those things a reality (and our prop).

Young should be in line for at least 35 minutes in this game, closer to or surpassing the 40-minute mark. However, I have to talk about how the 76ers did not play great defense on Young (obviously).

Questions are surrounding who and how much they guard Young in Game 2.

Ben Simmons did not guard Young one-on-one enough in Game 1. Matisse Thybulle only played 19 minutes off the bench because of Joel Embiid‘s return and, well, the rest of Philly can not guard Young.

That leaves us with a clear decision for Doc Rivers should do, but whether or not they can stop Young from switching onto lesser defensive-minded players is another concern. Young’s pick-and-roll game is top-notch and it is forcing more than a few issues for the 76ers, a la Young’s 10 assists.

Keep riding Young’s wave as he is liable to score 30 points every single night in the playoffs. I like his assist total or the double-double most nights as well.

I will be at the game in Philly, so if you will be too, tweet @vmoneysports. Best of luck if you tail and no offense 76ers’ fans!

Pick: Trae Young Over 27.5 Points (1u)
